2017 Riverbend Community Playground Update

posted Feb 21, 2017, 4:12 PM by Douglas Ratke

As part of our commitment to maintain safe play environments for our children, The City of Calgary Parks is implementing a city-wide lifecycle playground removal and replacement process, which involves removing, refurbishing and/or replacing community playgrounds and amenities throughout the city.

As part of this initiative, Calgary Parks evaluated the locations, condition and number of playgrounds in the community of Riverbend, and identified one playground for removal at Riverside Mews. This playground has reached the end of its life-cycle and no longer meets Canadian Safety Association guidelines. Parks will work with the community to refurbish the area, addressing community needs and desires for repurposing the space.
In addition to this removal, Calgary Parks would like to replace the playground located at Riverside Close, a few blocks away. We recognize the importance of playgrounds in our neighbourhoods and communities, and we will work with the community of Riverbend to ensure residents are aware of these changes. We anticipate this work will occur in the summer of 2017.

Playgrounds are selected for upgrade or removal based on regular inspections multiple times each year, following Canada Safety Association guidelines. These inspections ensure that regular maintenance and repairs are conducted to keep equipment in good shape. Factors such as community needs and maintenance costs are taken into consideration when upgrading or removing playground equipment.
Calgary's community parks and playgrounds are a great place for Calgarians of all ages to walk, jog, relax and play. The City maintains and oversees more than 1,100 playgrounds city-wide. We encourage you to continue to enjoy these great community spaces.
