President's Message - July 2017

posted Jun 30, 2017, 7:33 AM by Douglas Ratke

Hello Residents of Riverbend Community !

UPCOMING EVENTS

Here’s a list of what’s happening at the hall and around the community. Also check the Bold Sign outside of the community center on 18th Street. It also has updates and reminders!

Annual Riverbend Community Stampede Breakfast – July 9, 2017

We hope to make this year even bigger than last year and already on our way, with new attractions and items being added. If you have any ideas or suggestions to improve it, please let us know.

Please refer to our webpage for the latest information.

In addition, we are working with our new partners to see if there is any interest in having some seminars for our residents as follows:

Quarry Park Law

One of the things we are looking at is “ALL THINGS SMALL BUSINESS”.  The idea is to have an open house whereby residents could come and learn more about having a small business.  Quarry Park Law would be one of several companies.  Other’s would include Revenue Canada, Small Business Booking and Accounting, Printing companies for things like small business cards and advertising, as well as other related companies and services, and so on.

Secondly, we are working with Quarry Park Law at the idea if having some specific seminars for residents.  For example, wills and estates, incorporating your small business, and so on.

If you have any thoughts on what you would like to see, we would love to hear from you.

Joy and Vitality Center Quarry Park

In addition, we are working with the Joy and Vitality Center in Quarry Park to also put on a series of events geared to being healthy.  This is a wonderful family owned and run facility.

The sessions might include such things as Yoga for pain relief, kids yoga, kids art, breathing for heart health, yoga for weight loss and nutritional talks – to name a few.

The idea is to enhance and augment the programs and services we offer residents now.

We are very excited about our new partners and encourage our residents to contact them directly on other offerings that maybe of interest.

It is wonderful to see not only our existing partners but our new partners join us to help improve the lives of our residents

Volunteer week at RCA – July 17 to 21

We’re working on the community center to renovate/redecorate the hall during this week in July. We are offering experience, volunteer time, and $20 RCA vouchers for your help and will provide some food, fun and a chance to meet your neighbours!

Please sign up by either replying to info@riverbendcommunity.ca or completing the form found at the office, or online. Thanks to all!

Annual Riverbend Community Garden Competition – July 22nd, 2017

This will be the 8th Annual Competition that we are hosting.  The event offers cash and prizes in a number of categories.  Over the years, this event has continued to grow in popularity.  So, if you like gardening and are interested in entering your garden in the competition this year, please continue to keep your eyes on the Riverbend Community website for entry forms.

Check out the link for more information.

Live Band/Dance & Fun Casino Night - Oct 21st, 2017

Planning for this event is still in progress. We’re hoping to make it a regular night of relaxation and fun. This year it will be the wrap-up of our 30th Anniversary events. If you want to help plan it contact us at info@riverbendcommunity.ca. We’d love to hear your ideas!

Riverbend Community Parade of Garage Sales – Sept 16, 2017

In partnership with Tarryn Hamilton, a local realtor, two such events are hosted each year – one in June and one in September.

The June event was very successful, and we expect the same of the Fall event (date noted above).

Riverbend Community Association General Meetings

Per our By-Laws, Riverbend Community Association is required ti have three meetings.

The next one is scheduled as follows:

  • November 21, 2017

In the past, we used to have one in September as well, but, as attendance has been low due to people getting back to school, we have eliminated this one.

But, the plan is to still have three – in November, February, and April.

Also, it may be worth noting that we did not achieve quorum at our AGM in June 2017, so, we will be moving it to co-incide with our General Meeting in November.

Civic Election – Oct 16, 2017

For a list of who has registered to run, check out this link:

Annual Fall Craft Fair – November 4, 2017

The Annual Craft Fair will be held throughout the hall on November 4th.  If you want to be a part of it you can email us at craftfair@riverbendcommunity.ca. We will be posting more information and a registration form by early summer. Emphasis at the fair is on Christmas which always sneaks up on us just a few weeks later.

Buying Beer for Summer Events and support your RCA at the same time?

Village Brewery wants to help! Whether you’re planning a big community event or a block party with your neighbours for Neighbour Day, a Stampede Breakfast/BBQ, a community potluck, a Movie in the Park, or another kind of neighbourhood/community event, purchase any kind of Village beer from your neighbourhood liquor store between April 1 and August 31, 2017, and send a copy of your receipt to Rebecca Dakin, of the Federation of Calgary Communities by September 8th 2017. Village Brewery will then donate 15% of all neighbourhood beer purchases back to your community association for future community-building initiatives!

Playgrounds Project

Commencing in spring 2017, or when the weather warms up, we will be working with the City to continue to refurbish and fix our parks. This year, work on two parks will be done. Our hope is to try to tackle a park or two a year until they are all refurbished.

Check out the link for more information.

Riverbend Community Moving to Ward 12

For the next Civic election in 2017, Riverbend will be moving from Ward 9 (Councilor Gian-Carlo Carra) to Ward 12 (Councilor Shane Keating).

In the past, Riverbend was actually part of Ward 12. So it is nice that we are returning to our roots. Having said that, we have already reached out to our friends in the DouglasGlen/Quarry Park Community Associations to see how we can start collaborating on a host of new ideas to benefit the people in both communities.

Recommendations of the Provincial Electoral Boundary Commission

As noted in previous editions, the Commission was set to announce its recommendations for changes at the end of May 2017.  Of interest to Riverbend residents are the following two recommendations:

  •   Riverbend would be taken out of Calgary Acadia and moved to Calgary Fort.  As such, assuming all other changes remain constant, that would mean that our new MLA would be Joe Ceci instead of Brandy Payne.
  • Calgary Fort would be renamed Calgary Peigan.
  • It should be noted that these are not finalized changes, and as such, it is possible we remain in Calgary Acadia.  As we know more, we will pass the information on.  But, if you have any thoughts, please let us know.

Riverbend Community Association Website

The website is located at http://www.riverbendcommunity.ca.  We encourage you to check it out. If you’d like to help shape it contact us at info@riverbendcommunity.ca. We would like to have a Social Media person to look after our website, Facebook and twitter accounts. If you would be interested in volunteering for this position, please contact us.

The website now contains more information than any other community website to help our residents keep current on items of interest in our community.

So, check it out !

Riverbend Community Memberships

In honor of Canada’s 150th Birthday, Riverbend Community has extended the time for its Annual memberships.  As such, if you buy one now (cost varies depending on group), it will be good to the end of August 2018.

Green Line LRT Engagement

On June 26th, Administration will be making a final recommendation to City Council on station locations, transit oriented development, stage 1 construction (from 16 Avenue N to 126 Avenue SE) and the vision for the full alignment of the Green Line from 160 Avenue N to Seton.

As one of the many communities impacted, Riverbend Community is very involved, and has been since the effort started.

Click on this link for more information.

Ward 9 Strategic Report

Councilor Carra and his office released the results of the Ward 9 Report, a copy of which is available on the Riverbend website under announcements.

As you can see there is a lot on the go, with lots more to come.

We encourage our residents to reach out to us whenever you like to share your thoughts and concerns with us.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Though we are all volunteers, and not paid, we want to continue to make this one of the best communities ever!

See you in the fall 2017!

Douglas Ratke
President
