With the festive season approaching, many families are busy with holiday activities, including shopping and travel. Young children and infants may be catching naps along the way, and Health Canada would like to remind caregivers of some basic safety rules when it comes to sleep.

The golden rules of sleep safety: 

  • The safest place for your baby to sleep is alone, on his or her back, in a crib, cradle, or bassinet.
  • The crib should be placed in your bedroom for the first 6 months. 
  • An infant should never sleep on standard beds, water beds, futons, air mattresses, sofas, or armchairs. 
  • You should avoid the use of items such as pillows, loose bedding, bumper pads, foam padding, stuffed toys and sleep positioners, as these products may cause suffocation. 
  • Instead of a blanket, consider dressing your baby in light sleep clothing, like a one-piece sleeper. If a blanket is needed, infants are safest with a thin, lightweight, and breathable blanket.
  • You may reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome by always placing your baby on his or her back to sleep, providing a smoke-free environment, and keeping the room temperature at a comfortable level to avoid overheating.
  • Products such as carriages, strollers, car seats, infant swings, bouncers or playpens are not intended for infant sleep and should not be used for extended periods. 
  • Do not allow your baby to sleep in an upright or semi-upright position -- when asleep his or her head can fall forward and make breathing difficult. 
  • Do a regular scan of children’s sleeping areas, especially when travelling or staying with family or friends over the holidays. Make certain that cords on window blinds, shades and curtains are out of your child’s reach or secured with a tension device for looped cords.
